Description

This is one of our most highly recommended activities in Zanzibar, offering a perfect blend of experiences: swimming with dolphins, relaxing at the sandbanks, and snorkeling at Mnemba Reef. Mnemba Island has been ranked as the #1 Best Beach Destination in Africa by Tripsavvy.

During this trip, we typically encounter pods of bottlenose dolphins, which range from 10 to 20 individuals. These dolphins are usually grey, measuring between two to four meters in length, and their curved mouths give the impression that they are always smiling.

The Mnemba Island reef is renowned for its excellent water clarity and the unusual diversity of corals and tropical marine life for the Indian Ocean. While snorkeling, you can spot various fish species, including angelfish, blue-spotted rays, black snappers, groupers, red-toothed triggers, flounders, octopuses, leaf fish, scorpion fish, stone fish, frogfish, and many trevallies.

Mnemba Island is connected to a sandbank that is accessible only at low tide. The beach surrounding the sandbank features stunning crystal-clear water and soft white sand, making it a truly picturesque spot.

Itinerary

On this trip, we will start with a dolphin tour. Dolphins can be spotted in areas such as Kombe, Tangini, West Garden, Kichwani, or near Mnemba Island, all located northeast of Zanzibar Island. These locations are less crowded with tourists when visited early in the day. In this area, you can observe groups of 10 to 30 dolphins up close, and there are over 1,000 dolphins in total. Although dolphins are wild animals and can roam freely in the open sea, there is a 90% chance of sighting them.

After the dolphin tour, we will proceed to the Mnemba Island reef. This reef is renowned for its diverse marine life and is considered a paradise for snorkelers. Many people regard the Mnemba reef as a magical place. While some may compare it to other famous reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, each reef has its own unique characteristics.

The Sandbank, on the other hand, is affected by tides and is only visible during low tide. The water near the Sandbank is exceptionally clear and calm, resembling a natural pool. It’s an ideal location for relaxation and for kids to play in the white sand. During high tide, unfortunately, we have no option but to skip the Sandbank portion of the trip, as it becomes completely covered by the ocean.
